.: Coming Soon...

Today was another great day in this crazy adventure-of-study-leave.

I will share more later (and some pics) on the following topics:

.: Uno… What God is teaching me about Missional Student Ministry…
.: Dos… Fun at the Washington Nationals game tonite…
.: Tres… A classic story about Chico getting stuck in a maze of colored tubes…

.: Cuatro… Some music that has inspired me lately…
For now I need to get some rest so I can rise early (before my lovely wife and light-sleeping-son) to resume my daily routine for this week. We will share the stories soon. Until then…

.: silence…

April 22nd, 2008 by [r]weaver

.: Silence...

Three weeks ago, I decided that it was time to set aside some time to prioritize a “re-evaluation” of Allen Memorial Student Ministry. And I felt that I needed to place a strong emphasis on our three AM/SM programs and an even stronger emphasis on my own heart. It is my goal to blog daily about some of the things that the Lord is teaching me as I listen, seek, visioneer, and allow the Lord to re-center my heart for leading students at Allen.

Yesterday was the first day of this 7 days of study leave, and it was very productive. I have ONE (and only one) major goal each day this week… to allow the Lord to rehab the elements of my soul and to renew my heart for pastoring through the discipline of silence. When I was contemplating the amount (obviously quantified in the numerator of time) of “silence” that I should spend each day… the peace in my heart rested on 3 hours.

And so it was that I, Ryan Von Weaver, spent a three consecutive hours with no talking, no speaking, and much listening (for many of you… this may seem unbelievable… to even consider that I could spend that much time without verbal communication… but I assure you that from 10:43 am until 1:56 pm I was silent before the Lord as I carefully prayed and patiently worked). In preparation for this week of remembering the discipline of silence, I picked up a book by Maggie and Duffy Robbins at Ollie’s called “Enjoy the Silence“… and I forced myself to begin journaling again.

There are several questions that I am asking the Lord to answer this week… and I will share them with you throughout the week. Please pray that I will be faithful to this commitment… and pray that the Lord will continue the speaking and answering and moving and renewing and rehabbing in me…

.: vintage21 jesus video discussion…

April 21st, 2008 by [r]weaver

.: That's so BC...

We have been utilizing table groups to encourage discussion and application in our Sunday morning AM/SM Gathering with our students. We position our leaders among the five tables that I have set up in Studio 7o7 and then we allow the students to gravitate toward a table organically. The discussion typically flows from a common theme that I (or one of of leaders) generates through a video or a skit. Yesterday I decided to utilize a series of videos from Vintage 21 that have been around for a few years.

Vintage 21 is a church in Raleigh, North Carolina where they not only encourage “doubters” with a kind nod… but they actually advertise them as their target market within the context of their mission statement and their objective. Here’s what they say about these amazingly classic vidz that they created on their website…

“In the Spring of 2003, Vintage21 had a four week series on Jesus Christ, taking a deep look at what He said and did. It was difficult at times to get past our preconceived notions that had been developed by staunch, starched Sunday School classes of old. This is a satirical look at what some people think Jesus is like. Thank goodness He’s not.”

If you have not seen these videos… take a moment to watch them… and prepare to laugh your face off. I have also uploaded the DQ that I created for our leaders to utilize at their tables yesterday. Feel free to download it (from this link: Vintage21 - Jesus Videos DQ) and steal these discussion questions with a reckless abandon!

You can view the videos from their website HERE

Or you can utilize this little nifty link with all four of the videos smashed together HERE

.: watching softball?…

April 19th, 2008 by Amanda Weaver

Today Ryland discovered the joys of dirt. It was a beautiful day, and was the first time since last summer that Ryland has really been able to play outside. We went to a softball field to watch Ryan play with the Allen team in a tournament. Last year when we went to this tournament Ryland sat in my lap and the stroller the whole time. He wasn’t able to walk yet. But today… he was all over. I only saw Ryan bat once. The rest of my time was spent running around being the “border patrol” for my very active son. Who with his friend Carson kicked the soccer ball, jumped in a pile of leaves, and covered himself in dirt. It was a lot of fun watching Rylz in full boy mode!

.: robbery gone awry…

April 17th, 2008 by [r]weaver

I receive many forwards that are mostly filled with a bunch of random notfunnyness and notworthmytimeness and crappynothingness (as I am sure that most of you receive as well). But yesterday I received a forward that turned out pretty stinkin solid.

Solid enough that I wanted to share it with you…

This youtube video contains a story from December of 2007 about a 92-year-old woman from Dyersburg, Tennessee who was being robbed in the parking lot of a Wal-Mart. She ended up telling the man three times that she would not give him any money… and then she launched into sharing her faith with the man.

CHECK IT OUT HERE

The interview is worth a watch… and it’s worthy of being shared (even through the much-maligned avenue of “forwarding”). Anywho… much thanks to Windy Thompson for the forward. Holla!

.: the value of being known…

April 4th, 2008 by Amanda Weaver

This past weekend when we attended Impact in Ocean City we had the opportunity to spend some time with Tommy Woodard of the Skit Guys. Tommy is Ryan’s youth pastor, and mentor. He is the pastor who performed our premarital counseling as well as our wedding ceremony. Needless to say, he is an important part of Ryan’s life and mine as well.

The best thing about Tommy is not his high profile status among the Christian conference circuit. For me it is the fact that he knows my husband. Every time we get to spend time with Tommy, Ryan walks away knowing that Tommy loves him and is proud of him. Ryan walks away knowing that Tommy is in his corner. He walks away knowing that Tommy knows the wounds of his past, and sees great potential for his future because of them and despite them. Tommy extends to him encouragement, wisdom, support, and accountability. Tommy knows Ryan’s heart and chooses to invest in him.

Very few of us have relationships like this in our life outside of our family members. It is a blessing to find people who are willing to get into the trenches of your heart and know you. It is important for us to create relationships like this… to be mentors and friends who really seek to know each other. Relationships like this are not found. They are created through consistency and love.

To be known intimately is a longing of our heart, and a need in our lives. I believe within each of us our greatest craving is to be known by God. To know Him and to be known by Him is the key to a consistent journey towards Christ. The most important heart for us to know is the heart of Abba. His heart extends healing, reveals beauty, and provides guidance.

Search me, O God, and know my heart…

Psalm 139:23a

Oh, that we might know the Lord!
Let us press on to know him.
He will respond to us as surely as the arrival of dawn
or the coming of rains in early spring.

.: the dream job…

April 4th, 2008 by Amanda Weaver

Directing...

Back in early November, Ryan came home from one of the weekly Allen Staff meetings and we went through the usual debriefing of his day and some of the things that happened in their meeting. Ryan casually mentioned that there had been discussion concerning a need for a Creative Arts Director/Pastor or Visual Arts Director/Pastor (they weren’t quite sure what to call it). As he was telling me about it I had one of those moments where you know that God is about to do something cool. I knew this was it. The dream job I had been waiting for. The undefinable job that would fit the eclectic talent, experience, and calling that God placed within in me. The job that would utilize, grow, and even stretch the education and experience that I had received at Southeastern Oklahoma State University as well as the much scoffed at degree I chose (BA in Musical Theater). That day I began to pray that God would allow me to have the job, and that He would remove the obstacles that might hinder me from serving at Allen in this new capacity (Obstacle 1. I am the wife of the youth pastor, Obstacle 2. We would have to put Ryland in some sort of child care situation.). About a week later Ryan and I sat down talked about it and of course he whole heartedly supported me in pursuing the position (he’s pretty much the best husband ever). From there I contacted our senior pastor, Bill Warren, and requested that when and if the position was officially created that I be allowed to submit my resume’ for consideration. He told me to “go ahead and send it.” And the process began… there was a lot of waiting, multiple interviews/meetings and then it all culminated in the nerve racking voting process that all ministers go through. I officially became the Creative Arts Pastor @ Allen Memorial Baptist Church on January 1st, 2008. Since then Ryland has been blessed with some amazing people who care for him on Tuesdays during staff meetings (Sarah Rushing one of the college ministers at S.U.) and on Sundays before the church childcare starts (Danny and Patty Morris).

My job description, as with most ministry positions, is very broad. Here are a few things I am responsible for: drama team, announcement team, lighting designs, lighting team, video team, media projection team, directing all services, planning services with our senior pastor and worship pastor, creating design concepts for sermons and sermon series (logos, stage props, & promotional materials), our website, locating or creating videos (to use as illustrations, worship enhancement, promotion etc..), and creating power point for sermons that are congruent with the design concept.

My positions is a 25 hour a week part time positions (although I am averaging 39 hours per week). I do most of my work from home (Thank you Jesus for laptops and WiFi). My three big workdays are Tuesday, which is staff meeting, Thursday, which is the day we rehearse our services, and of course Sunday when it all goes down.

I am so thankful for God’s provision. He has proven Himself faithful once again. There is nothing like being able to do what you were created to. It makes all the usual job issues worth dealing with and working out. I still have a lot to learn about being a Creative Arts Pastor, but I am continually astounded at the ways God provides the knowledge, skills, resources, and people I need to do my job. I am also amazed by the way He is using my past experiences in this job. There are so many random things I did as an actress, singer, student, employee, ministry volunteer, etc… that I thought had no purpose, but now they are paying huge dividends. My Abba is Awesome!!! Every detail of His plan is perfect, and I am humbled that I get to be a part of it.

I believe that God uses art, music, theatre, media, lighting, and websites to draw people unto Himself and ultimately Glorify His name. That is why I am passionate about adding those elements to our church. I love being the Creative Arts Pastor @ Allen Memorial Baptist Church.
