Today Ryland discovered the joys of dirt. It was a beautiful day, and was the first time since last summer that Ryland has really been able to play outside. We went to a softball field to watch Ryan play with the Allen team in a tournament. Last year when we went to this tournament Ryland sat in my lap and the stroller the whole time. He wasn’t able to walk yet. But today… he was all over. I only saw Ryan bat once. The rest of my time was spent running around being the “border patrol” for my very active son. Who with his friend Carson kicked the soccer ball, jumped in a pile of leaves, and covered himself in dirt. It was a lot of fun watching Rylz in full boy mode!

It has been no secret that Chico rarely allows us to accessorize him with hats and the such. When he is in one of these rare moods… we take full advantage by allowing him to pick his hat of choice. Sometimes he chooses predictably by grabbing the OU cap that his Uncle Willy and Aunt Jo bought him for Christmas… and sometimes he goes for one of the random hats that we have collected (some through generous gifts and others through Amanda’s uncanny sense of “style”… hahahaaa). Sunglasses almost never make the cut… but this may be changing now that we are a little more able to convince him of the benefits of less sunlight in his eyes while we are cruisin in the Jeep.
Here are a couple of pics that we have snapped in the last week while he was in one of these RARE accessorization moods…

The following is the unassisted artwork of the goatee sculptor Ryland Von Weaver. This original goatee sculpture series is entitled “Ode to the Colonel.” I hope you can enjoy and appreciate the fresh vision of this young sculptor.

Derick Weaver (Ryland’s “Uncle T”) just sent me these photos by email today. He was learning a new editing software in his Videotech class at Honey Grove High School and decided to practice his recently learned skillz on a couple of his favorite nephew’s photos that we have blogged in the last few months.
This is a little bit of Ryland re-designed…

Here is the first of a few chicoland blogs that will get you updated on the life of Ryland…
General Overview:
Rylz is now 19 months old. He is a running, climbing, jabbering fool. He has about 20-25 discernible words in his vocabulary. His favorite phrases are “Oh Cool” and “Two Shoes”. His favorite word is Ball. His favorite toy is anything looking like a ball. His favorite activity is kicking, throwing, or sitting on any ball. His favorite thing to eat is Clementine Oranges. He likes going to the “Studio” (said… Oh-leo!) with Dadda. He can pee in a toilet (still working on the other… he does have the grunting part down though). He is 34 inches tall, wears a size 7 shoe, and 2T clothing.
Here are a few photos we took of Rylz chillin’ and cheezin’ in his new Rangers hat we bought him at the mall tonight.

Ryland has been able to pat, bang, clap, and move to the beat for quite some time now. In fact he breaks out in an adorable dance to anything resembling a beat. And… thanks to Mr. Michael Tull, he loves to bang on the Djembe and anything he can find that will make a similar sound. The rhythm has definately got him.
Recently he was watching the AM/SM Worship Team play and he fell in love with the trap set. After our practice he climbed on the stage and began to beat on one of the floor toms. It didn’t take long for Ryland to get Tyler Ringer to give him the sticks and assist him in playing. It was exciting to watch as Ryland “played” the drums. Of course he’s got a long way to go, but Chico definitley has a future in drumming (hahahahaha).
Thanks Tyler for taking the time to give Rylz his first drum lesson!

Rylz and I have had the wonderful opportunity be a part of AMBC’s “Facedown Day of Prayer” (a prayer emphasis from 6am-6pm every Wednesday) at our new church building. We attend during the 12-1pm time slot (which Ryan leads) each week. During that hour we start out in the room with those who have gathered to seek God’s face… then chico and I begin prayer-strollering inside the new building while Dadda and the others continue to pray in the room. We begin with the worship center, then head up to Studio 7o7, and conclude in the children’s ministry area.
Over the weeks it has been a meaningful time of prayer and worship with my son. It is amazing to hear him babble as I pray out loud… or sing along as we hang out in the worship center. Let me tell you… the kid knows how to make a joyful noise! I am so impressed and moved by the evidence I see in my son’s life of his interaction with The Holy. I am convinced that God pursues the young and the old with equal passion.
One of our joys has been watching “Mr. Sullivan” (a mural artist who is also the parent of one of our students) paint animals and other such things in the pre-school area. It has been fun to watch the hallways evolve. Each week new animals have appeared. This past week the paintings had all been completed, so I let Ryland out of the stroller to check them out. He was captivated by the brightly colored playful animals. He talked to them. Ran from room to room checking the animals out as well as each room’s contents. The children’s ministry area is wonderful! I look forward to seeing the impact that God is going to make in children’s lives through Allen. Children will connect, grow, and serve in this place. I am thankful that my son has the opportunity to be a part of this…

The following is a pictoral documentary of playtime with a thirteen month-old human named Ryland. These pictures were taken over the span of 15 minutes. Only one camera was used. The photographer did interact with the subject… but only when necessary to prevent injury, distress, and for normal mother-son play. No Ryland’s were harmed in the making of this documentary.

The Subject

A Rare Sighting… The Ryland Wearing a Hat

Refusing To Look At The Camera

The Ryland Becomes Curious About the Camera

Playing the Yell Game
(A game that features note duration, pitch change, and the “word” Ahhhh….
can be played with 1-2 opponents)

Getting Tickled… Showing off Four of His Eight Teeth… and Clean Nostrils!

Taking a Break to Lean on the Mother

The Ryland Grabs His Favorite Book.
“Reading” is One of The Ryland’s Favorite Playtime Activities. He can sit and “read” books for double digit numbers of minutes. He loves to bring books to his parents… so they will read to him. He sits and listens as they read. After finishing he takes the book and prentends to read the book himself. Often he will then bring another book to be read or hand the same book back to the parent to read agian. It is not uncommon for the Ryland to read 5-10 books in one sitting.
